The good news is unlike most roof repairs you can fix an eave or gable overhang rake without climbing onto the roof.
Gable roof soffit corner.
The other end will be closest to you.
Nail j channel against the existing soffit into the soffit framing.
Rakes can also be pronounced and finish the end of a gable overhang.
Hip roofs have a continuous cornice that extends completely around the building.
The picture above shows the plan view of a gable roof ladder trusses are made up using four noggins bridging at each corner to support a rafter outside the building.
Roof repairs typically involve replacing damaged shingles and rusted flashing but the overhang of a roof is often the first area to succumb to rot peeling paint and other weather related problems.
The cleanest look for a gable end with a closed eave is to angle the soffit therefore eliminating the need to resolve the eave at the gable end.
That rafter outside forms the overhang for the barge boards to fix to and so the soffit boards and ventilation are continuous all the way.
Here s how to frame a boxed soffit on the eave and gable end of a building.
Framing a gable roof building a gable with barge end purlin struts and collar ties.
This is how i did my pole barn workshop and at the end of the video i also show.
On corners notch the top and backside of the j channel the width of corner boards and cut the bottom to extend past corner boards the width of the next piece.
So how do you end eave soffit and transition to gable soffit.
Thanks for the info.
This configuration gives the look of an open eave but it has the same benefits ease of maintenance and energy performance as a closed eave.
This can be as far as two feet from the wall.
Cut a 45 degree angle on adjoining pieces to give a mock miter appearance to corners.
Begin at one bottom edge of the gable and slide the soffit into the f channel along the wall.
My next area of concern is which is the very corner where the gable end meets the 45 degree eave roof edge.
Before you nail it slide it a tiny bit out from the back of the f channel approximately 1 16 inch.
Each piece of 4 foot length should have a minimum of 6 screws in it.
From the edge of my fascia board its like 9 to sheathing.
Start at one corner of your house and work your way around using the drill or electric screwdriver to drive one wood screw twice as long as the material is thick through the soffit material and into the gable at each corner of the piece and one in the middle.
This is a very small amount but it will keep your soffit from bending later.
Soffits are actually part of the cornice or eave the point where the roof projection and the side walls of the building meet.
